Electronic Travel Authority - Subclass 601
The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) – Subclass 601 is one of the easiest visas for eligible passport holders to apply for. Applications are quick, processed online, and in most cases approved within minutes or a few hours.
This visa allows short-term stays in Australia for tourism or business visitor activities, but not for work.
Hold a valid passport from an ETA-eligible country.
Intend to stay in Australia for up to 3 months at a time within a 12-month period.
Meet health and character requirements.
Do not have an existing visa that conflicts with the ETA.
ETA-eligible passports include:
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Korea, San Marino, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom (citizens and British National Overseas), United States of America, and Vatican City.
What You Can Do With This Visa
Fast approval – Many visas are granted within hours.
Multiple entries – Travel in and out of Australia as many times as you like within 12 months.
Convenient validity – Stay for up to 3 months per visit.
Low cost – The ETA has a minimal or no government application charge (service fees may apply).
Common Issues Faced by Applicants
Work misunderstanding – Some applicants attempt to work while on an ETA, which is strictly prohibited.
Overstaying – Staying longer than 3 months without leaving the country makes you unlawful.
Health requirements – Applicants with certain medical conditions may be asked to undergo a health assessment before travel.
Negative history – If you have criminal convictions, immigration issues, or have recently spent significant time in Australia, your application may face delays or refusal.
Expired visa – Letting a visa expire without applying for a new one can have serious consequences, even if you reapply the next day.
Both visas allow short stays in Australia, but eligibility differs. The ETA (601) is generally available to a broader range of countries (including Asia and North America), while the eVisitor (651) is only for European passport holders.
