Understanding the Points Test

All Subclass 491 applicants are ranked through the General Skilled Migration points test. You must score at least 65 points to be eligible, though higher scores increase your chances of receiving an invitation sooner.

Points are awarded for:

    • Age (maximum points between 25–32 years old)

    • English language ability

    • Skilled employment experience (in Australia or overseas)

    • Educational qualifications

    • Australian study requirement

    • Specialist education qualifications

    • Partner skills

    • Nomination or sponsorship by a state/territory or family member

Common Issues Applicants Face

Many applicants face challenges during the Subclass 491 visa process, such as:

  • Not meeting the English language requirement

  • Choosing the wrong occupation or failing to verify eligibility with the right state/territory

  • Delays in obtaining a positive skills assessment

  • Underestimating the competition—candidates with higher points are often invited first

  • Not providing sufficient evidence for work experience or qualifications

  • Confusion about state-specific nomination rules, as each state/territory has its own requirements

At Bay Migration Solutions, our experienced consultants help you navigate these challenges, ensuring your application is accurate, competitive, and tailored to the right pathway.
